Sunday, June 6th, 2010 We return this week to the Lord’s Table, and to our sermon series on the “Amen, amen” passages in John’s Gospel.  In Sunday's passage, Jesus is speaking words of comfort and instruction to His disciples.  Even though Jesus has taught His disciples thoroughly, it is amazing how much the disciples still do not seem to understand.  Of course, Jesus knows this, and knows that until the disciples grasp the reality of His death and resurrection, they will never be able to make sense of it all.  Still, Jesus continues to teach and correct, and to prepare and point them toward the future.  Our passage this Sunday morning will be John 14:8-14.  In these verses Jesus makes a statement that we can scarcely believe.  Jesus’ followers, He says, will come to do even greater works than He himself has been doing!  How can this even be possible?  We shall give very careful attention to Jesus’ words in order to find out. Sunday, May 30th, 2010   Today is our first Sunday together since saying farewell to Pastor Mark.  As he follows the Lord’s call to ministry in Ohio, we continue to fulfill our calling right here in Northwest Grand Rapids.  Transitions are seldom easy, yet the Lord uses them in our lives to draw our focus on Him, and strengthen our faith.  I am sure that when the ancient Israelites had finished their years of wandering in the wilderness, and looked across the Jordan River to the Promised Land, there were some among them who wondered how the transition to a new place under a new leader would turn out.  The only leader they had ever known was Moses, and now Joshua was God’s appointed man.  In His wisdom, the Lord very quickly demonstrates His approval of Joshua before all the people, and leads them to a display of faith which the writer of Hebrews commends to us as an example worthy of emulation.  Our passage Sunday morning is Hebrews 11:30,... There are so many themes that could be explored on the Day of Pentecost. Fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ, when prophecy was fulfilled and the Spirit of God was poured out on the Church, a new era began. We could rightly reflect on the birth and role of the Church. We could easily study the mission of the Church and the commission to be witnesses for the Gospel. Of course, we must remember the presence and ministry of the Holy Spirit. This year, our focus will be the work of the Spirit in conjunction with the revealed Word of God. As believers, we are commanded not to put out the Spirit’s fire. This is an important warning, and the symbolism of fire conveys more than one key idea. This will be our focus as we look at 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22. Download MP3 Audio
