This month of May has taken on a real missionary emphasis for us at Highland Hills Baptist Church.  We are certainly looking forward to honoring John and Marilyn VandenAkker on Pentecost Sunday at the end of the month.  We also have the joy of hearing from two of our supported missionaries.  This Sunday morning, the message from God’s Word is brought to us from Kent Pool, ABWE missionary to the Philippines.  It is our great privilege to have Kent and Sandra with us.  Next Sunday morning, Tom Graef, ABWE missionary to Romania will be with us. The Gospel writer Mark tells us that Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went to the tomb very early on the first day of the week.  Instead of finding what they expected—the body of Jesus—they were met by an angelic messenger with wonderful news: “He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.”  The angel calls the women to “see,” which means to “look,” to “behold.”  The meaning and implications of this news is the subject of our rejoicing and attention today.  One feature of the Greek language used in the New Testament that isn’t a common feature in our English is the frequent use of the word to “look” or “behold.”  It often carries a sense of emphasis.  Because English is usually clear and often smoother without this insertion, it is commonly left out.  There are times, however, when the emphasis should be noted.  Such is... Ask the average American which holiday on the calendar is most associated with love and I expect they would answer “Valentine’s Day.”  A lot of money gets spent every February 14th, on cards, candy and flowers, all to celebrate love.  While Valentine’s Day may be the most obvious answer, it may not be the best answer.  Good Friday may be the most love filled event we mark during the course of the year.  Consider this, the Apostle John tells us in his first letter, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.”  This is the starting point for any ultimate discussion about love.  As the Apostle Paul reminds us in his letter to the Romans, “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  It is fitting then, that we complete our list of the seven characteristics in Second Peter which are to supplement our faith at the same time we ... In this era of viral YouTube videos, one that caused a splash earlier this year was created by a sincere young man in which he presents a poem about why “Jesus hates religion.”  It was posted in January—which is almost an eternity ago as far as viral video’s go—but it has been viewed over 20 million times.  It’s not my intent to promote or critique the video, but only to point out that its popularity reflects how well it captures the present sentiment of many against “religiosity,” or “organized religion.”  Today, the word “religion” is a negative word.  No one would want to be labeled “religious.”  It has me thinking about Sunday's word from Second Peter.  The word is “godliness.”  Would you be comfortable if someone called you “godly,” or concerned with “godliness?”  If your mind equates this with “pious self-righteousne...
