We have seen quite a number of weddings at Highland Hills this year. Every wedding, of course, reminds us of the relationship of Christ to His Bride, the Church. Scripture teaches this. This imagery also teaches us to understand our relationship with Christ as a covenantal relationship. A covenant—whether in marriage or with Christ—requires a pledge of complete and unreserved commitment to the other. I think we so often speak of our commitments to Christ we may overlook His commitment to us. He is not indifferent in this relationship! This Sunday I would like to conclude the series we have been studying in the Book of Hebrews by considering the benediction/prayer found in Chapter 13. These two verses summarize the message of the entire book, and especially underscore the lessons on faith from chapter 11, and outlook on perseverance in chapter 12. The realities of our covenant relationship will be found here as well. Our text is Hebrews 13:20, 21.

Sunday August 8th, 2010 As we worked through Hebrews chapter eleven, we found it rich in examples of men and women living by faith. The author of Hebrews drew on these examples from the Old Testament. Time and again we saw wholehearted trust and obedience to the Word of the Living God. Of course, not every life recorded in the Old Testament is an example to be followed. There are many lives that serve rather as warnings. Since the author of Hebrews has already made good use of the Old Testament, it is very natural for him to draw our attention there once again as he seeks to illustrate faithlessness. The account recorded in Hebrews 12:14-17 is taken from the Book of Genesis, and the life of Jacob’s brother, Esau. Esau demonstrated neither trust nor obedience, and thus had a sobering disregard for holiness. We will do well to heed the warning of his life as we consider this passage from Hebrews chapter twelve.

It seems like most small children go through a phase where they repeatedly ask the question “Why?” They arrive at the developmental stage where they are beginning to make connections in their understanding, and are hungry for information and explanation. The repeated question, “Why?” can even become annoying because there are so many things to answer. By contrast, it is a mark of growth and maturity to possess an understanding of things so that instead of asking questions, one knows the answer to them. Our text for Sunday morning is John 16:23-18, as we return this week to our sermon series on the “Amen, amen” passages in John’s Gospel. Jesus is preparing His disciples for his departure. Among other things, He wants to assure them that they are not merely spectators to His work of salvation. Yes, of course, Christ alone does the work, but salvation is not something that Jesus does “to” his disciples, but “for” them. As His followers participate in the benefits of salvation, they are “In the know,” and not left in the dark about the work and plans of God.

Track and Field is a Spring season sport in Michigan. Every Spring, the distance runners, shake off the rust of winter inactivity, and train for their events. There is often a remarkable progress that is evident over the season. At first, the runners strain to accomplish 3200 meters. After several laps, their stride becomes choppy, and they hold their hands in a way that breaks their form. But, as the weather warms, training continues and pays off. Stamina is gained, and the runners compete fluidly and with confidence. The discipline of athletic training is an apt image for the work of God in our lives. He is teaching us, training us, disciplining us for our benefit. When we realize this, we can engage our training with courage and gratitude. Out text for Sunday morning is Hebrews 12:4-13. The Scriptures will encourage us to spiritually strengthen “feeble arms and weeks knees,” as we recognize God at work in us.

Independence Day in America is a time to remember an idea and an event. The idea is the inalienable right to liberty. The event, of course, is the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. In 1776, a new nation was birthed, but not without struggle. The hardship those Patriots were willing to endure resulted in the blessings of political freedom we enjoy in America today. This year July 4th, falls on a Sunday. This Sunday, we also remember an even more profound event. We are reminded of the crucifixion of our Savior, Jesus Christ, as we will observe our Lord’s Table. He suffered for us so that we might have true spiritual freedom. Our text Sunday morning is John 16:16-22, as we return this week to our sermon series on the “Amen, amen” passages in John’s Gospel.

One of the key words that any diligent student of Scripture knows to key on is the word “therefore.” Often in the New Testament, the word “therefore” serves as a transition between instruction about “how things are,” and “what we should then do.” By “how things are,” we mean things like: who God is, and what He has done for us in Christ, and what the believer’s identity is in Christ. Faithful living is always rooted in an understanding of truths such as these. Faithful living is also active living. We are called to do certain things in light of the truths we know. We have learned much about faith during our study of Hebrews 11. Now that we are established in this truth, we are prepared for a call to active obedience. We are ready to hear the “therefore.” Our text for Sunday is Hebrews 12:1-3.

The writer of Hebrews has led us through Faith’s ‘Hall of Fame’. We have been in awe of the faith of the ancients as we have seen their unwavering trust and obedience. As this chapter is brought to a close perhaps we expect a final exhortation to learn from their example. What the author, however, gives us is something much more. We learn that we—through our faith—are part of the story. God ultimately has one program, and everyone who experiences redemption is part of that agenda. It is only by Christ Jesus, the Superior Sacrifice, and the Superior High Priest who established a Superior Covenant that any of us reach the goal of our faith. Because of Him, we all arrive at the goal together. We complete Hebrews chapter 11 on Sunday morning.

This week’s presidential visit to Kalamazoo will long be remembered by most of the students of Kalamazoo Central High School. One embarrassed student, however, won’t have clear memories of the president’s speech, as he was unable to stay awake while the President gave his remarks. Fortunately for him, he will be able to watch the speech—and himself--on YouTube for the rest of his life. The writer of Hebrews has been delivering a great sermon on faith in chapter Hebrews 11. Still, even he realizes that an audience cannot listen or read endlessly. There will always be more that could be said then needs to be said. He confesses in verse 32, that he doesn’t have time to continue to develop all the Old Testament heroes of faith and the record of their deeds. While that may be true, the author isn’t finished drawing lessons for us from the record of faithful people. We will spend this week and next finishing this chapter, and considering God’s message for us in these verses.

Sunday, June 6th, 2010 We return this week to the Lord’s Table, and to our sermon series on the “Amen, amen” passages in John’s Gospel. In Sunday's passage, Jesus is speaking words of comfort and instruction to His disciples. Even though Jesus has taught His disciples thoroughly, it is amazing how much the disciples still do not seem to understand. Of course, Jesus knows this, and knows that until the disciples grasp the reality of His death and resurrection, they will never be able to make sense of it all. Still, Jesus continues to teach and correct, and to prepare and point them toward the future. Our passage this Sunday morning will be John 14:8-14. In these verses Jesus makes a statement that we can scarcely believe. Jesus’ followers, He says, will come to do even greater works than He himself has been doing! How can this even be possible? We shall give very careful attention to Jesus’ words in order to find out.

Sunday, May 30th, 2010 Today is our first Sunday together since saying farewell to Pastor Mark. As he follows the Lord’s call to ministry in Ohio, we continue to fulfill our calling right here in Northwest Grand Rapids. Transitions are seldom easy, yet the Lord uses them in our lives to draw our focus on Him, and strengthen our faith. I am sure that when the ancient Israelites had finished their years of wandering in the wilderness, and looked across the Jordan River to the Promised Land, there were some among them who wondered how the transition to a new place under a new leader would turn out. The only leader they had ever known was Moses, and now Joshua was God’s appointed man. In His wisdom, the Lord very quickly demonstrates His approval of Joshua before all the people, and leads them to a display of faith which the writer of Hebrews commends to us as an example worthy of emulation. Our passage Sunday morning is Hebrews 11:30, 31.

There are so many themes that could be explored on the Day of Pentecost. Fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ, when prophecy was fulfilled and the Spirit of God was poured out on the Church, a new era began. We could rightly reflect on the birth and role of the Church. We could easily study the mission of the Church and the commission to be witnesses for the Gospel. Of course, we must remember the presence and ministry of the Holy Spirit. This year, our focus will be the work of the Spirit in conjunction with the revealed Word of God. As believers, we are commanded not to put out the Spirit’s fire. This is an important warning, and the symbolism of fire conveys more than one key idea. This will be our focus as we look at 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22.

Kent and Sandra are veteran missionaries with ABWE in the Philippines, and have a treasured relationship with us as one of their supporting churches. The Pools have been in the states for a family wedding, and will be returning to the Philippines in about a week. Kent will be bringing the message from God’s Word on Sunday morning.
